Cricket is just under 4 months old and is probably a Jack Russell Cross. She will probably end up being between 40-50 pounds.
She is a sweet, lovely, active dog.
Cricket will need spaying when she reaches the right age and Dog Bless pays for the surgery. It is mandatory and forms part of your adoption contract.
Please note that when adopting puppies it is important to have someone home a good portion of the day or allow access to the outside for potty training. Also, there is a time commitment required to ensure your puppy receives the proper amount of exercise and training. Please read our Puppy Handout for more information.
Here's what Cricket's foster mom (Darcie Jennings from Communicanine) says:
Cricket is one of the most intelligent dogs I've had the privilege to work with. She picks up things lightening fast which, unfortunately, also means that she learns things you don't want her to just as quickly!
In the first two weeks she was with me she learned 13 commands which she (mostly) responds well to given her age and the limited time we've been training together. Her repertoire currently includes sit, down, come here, a response to her name, kennel, speak, shush, leave-it, drop etc. We are currently working on getting a response to the most important of those commands - come and leave-it - in more difficult circumstances, like on the trail when we are hiking and while she is playing with another dog.
She is not a dog for the faint of heart or likely a good candidate for a first time dog owner. She is a busy little girl and likes to be doing something more than just resting. She has a moderate energy level. She's not at all hyper but at the same time is not a laid back couch potato type either.
I do structured and unstructured training sessions throughout the day with Cricket to keep her mind engaged - usually a total of 15 or so minutes. An intelligent dog with an idle mind is a troublesome dog, indeed, so I have consciously created a focus for her intellect and energy which she has done incredibly well with. She is way calmer and more restful now than she was when she first came to live with me.
It would be best if she had a home with another dog to help keep her busy. She loves the companionship of other dogs and also learns from them by watching and following along. She also has proven to be lovely with cats.
If you are looking for a cuddly lap dog that you can touch and pet all the time, Cricket is NOT your girl. She is independent and content with her own company, although likes lying beside you on the couch when she settles. If you pet her too much while she is resting or playing, she simply gets up and moves to another couch or area. She is absolutely a sweet heart of the biggest kind, and has melted hearts time and again.
Cricket will not be suitable for a home with younger children, primarily due to not wanting to be touched/petted all the time. This WILL be a problem if she ends up where someone is constantly trying to touch her.
She will be an amazing dog for agility, flyball, disc dog, nose work or anything that involves doing or learning new things. On going training will be a must for her and she will not be suited for being exercised off leash for quite some time (until her come command is more reliable with distractions). For the time being, she runs freely with a 25' line attached to her for safety.
I have made a series of videos, called 'The Puppy Project," available on Youtube chronicling some of Crickets training. Please be sure to have watched at least the first video to learn more about Cricket's history before applying.
